Vintage Inspired Quilting

Looks can certainly be deceiving! Whilst it may appear that quilts are just fabrics haphazardly sewn together, quilts have meaning and are steeped in rich artistry, culture and history. Each quilt tells a unique story, often showcasing the materials and techniques of its period. The intricate patterns and vibrant fabrics reveal the creativity and resourcefulness of quilters who transformed pieces of scrap fabric into meaningful quilts.

This week Betty Lorna Vintage is showcasing two stunning quilts inspired by the Great Depression era. A beautiful blend of 1930’s reproduction floral fabrics, and vibrant modern prints were used to create this series of vintage inspired quilts.

Depression Era Quilting

Entitled: Ageless Floristry

The floral prints featured in these quilt blocks are patterned after prints used on cotton feed sacks used to store flour and grain during the Great Depression. With limited means of purchasing new fabrics, women during this period began to recycle the feed sacks which were decorated with playful images and simple floral designs. When these feed sacks were not being utilised in clothing and undergarments, these gorgeous cotton prints were sewn into quilts.

Quilts during this period not only served a utilitarian purpose – providing comfort and warmth – they often served as a canvas for self-expression and helped foster a sense of community. As women during this period would come together at quilting bees and groups to share skills, exchange fabric and offer emotional support during those trying times.

Entitled: Pretty Petal Puzzles

Hopefully, I have done this quilting style justice, and managed to capture the creativity and resourcefulness of those who lived during this period. So that we can continue to appreciate the beauty of handmade items that embody heritage and uniqueness.

Well, I think that’s it from me. Thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed this article about vintage inspired quilting, and continue to stay tuned for more quilting fun.
